A cockermouth man has retired after more than 40 years as an optician.

He had a retirement lunch at the North Lakes Hotel this month, which was attended by 11 colleagues.

Pepper Pig eye-test

We have recently added a cartoon for children to the kids section within eyecare. It involves Pepper Pig going for an eye-test. Check it out at: http://www.conlons.co.uk/Peppa_Pig.

Pepper Pig is the lead chacter within a children's show that consists of many different, 5 minute, episodes. It revolves around the life of Peppa, a young girl pig, and her family and friends. It is an excellent cartoon that promotes clear language around everyday topics (such as going to the optician) to young children.

Haribo Sweets - Nice touch or not?

We have recently been including a bag of Haribo within each dispatch of contact lenses for those on direct debit. This is only for a limited period but has been received with very mixed results. We have received much positive feedback with people seeing it as a nice little harmless gesture. On the other hand, it has left others confused with some thinking that perhaps someone accidently dropped some of their lunch into their contacts! Also, they are not great for teeth although are only a little bag. What do you think?

An employee of Conlons Opticians in Barrow has been praised for her long service.

Vicki Burgess, 31, has received a Long Standing Achievement Award for all her time and dedication to the opticians group.

The award was presented at the companies annual awards ceremony held at the Ramada Hotel in Birmingham by Conlons chairman Mike Barton and director of optometry Philip Owen.

Conlons Opticians in Barrow has been serving the local community for more than 35 years.

Barrow store manager Ian Hechle said: "Vicki Burgess started working at Conlons in Barrow at the age of 16 and has consistently provided a top level of service to the company.

"We'd like to thank her for her loyalty, hard work and dedication over the years."

Mrs Burgess whose leisure pastimes including keeping fit and camping in the great outdoors with her family, is an optical adviser advising customers about their specs and helping them with fittings.

BlogKeyboard

Conlons is very proud of its history spanning back over 5 family generations to 1882. Over this time, we have frequently had to reinvent ourselves in the light of the social, economic, legal and technological environment around us. Central to this, and in all environments, Conlons has always maintained that a focus on customer service and always trying to exceed expectations is central to our existence and core-values. This is no exception online. Conlons has had a web-presence since websites became common in the mid-90s. However, in 2009 we launched our latest site and are now ready to embrace the modern social media. We are keen to learn whether keeping in touch with sound bites via twitter, and with more detailed articles through ‘blogs’ is of value to our customers. Well here goes. This is our first blog. We intend to use this facility to keep our customers up to date with our news, announcements, eye-health, fashion, our local communities and charities. We will also keep you up to date with our latest products including glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses and hearing aids, and will endeavour to keep you informed of our latest competitions and offers.

We do hope you enjoy our blogs and would very much like to receive your comments and feedback. We are hoping to create discussion forums so please be in touch if you would like something covered. If you do have any comments, please add them below.
