| Also known as AMD or ARMD, age-related macular degeneration describes a variety of condition characterised by a gradual loss of central vision caused by damage to the central part of the retina known as the macula. It is the most common cause of registered blindness in the UK. Although it may be hereditary other factors such as poor dietary intake of antioxidants and smoking are also known contribute to its onset and deterioration. |
