Bifocals

Bifocal literally means “two focuses” and there are many types of bifocal lens available.  If you currently wear distance and reading glasses you would almost certainly find them of benefit, and if you currently only wear reading glasses there are occasions when bifocals with plain glass in the top can be very useful so you don’t have to keep taking off your reading glasses or peering over the top of them.

If you currently wear varifocals and are happy with them we would not recommend bifocals.  For bifocals we would recommend a metal frame with adjustable nose pads – that way the fit can be fine tuned if you feel the bifocal needs to be a little higher or lower than standard after the event.
As standard we offer D28 bifocals or D35 bifocals if you require a larger reading width.  There are many different kinds of bifocals and we can easily match an existing pair if you send them to us when you have selected your frame.  If you currently wear them and are happy with what you are wearing then we would recommend staying with the same type.

We position the highest point of the reading area in line with your bottom eyelid taking into account your individual head posture and the visual tasks you will be carrying out in your new glasses.  All our bifocals are customised to your individual requirements for example if you feel you would like the reading segment higher (for example if mainly used for viewing a computer monitor) or lower (for example if you are a professional driver) then it’s no problem.

Bifocals are required by people with presbyopia, typically over 45 years of age.  They provide good vision for distance and near, however over the age of about 55 people generally find that they can no-longer focus on middle distance – then either trifocals, or more likely varifocals, are required.
