A dispensing optician, having studied for a minimum of three years, is qualified to supply and fit glasses, and for the protection of the public is registered with the General Optical Council. Until relatively recently only registered opticians could fit dispense spectacles, however these days you are more likely to be dispensed by a trained optical advisor. Certain groups of people must be dispensed by a registered optician – these include children and those registered blind or partially sighted.
Ophthalmic dispensing has amongst the most flexible entry requirements for study of any profession ranging from 10 years suitable work experience to 5 GCSE’s or 2 / 3 A-levels for diploma and degree courses respectively .
