In our fifties presbyopia advances such that our near glasses can be too close for certain tasks. Usually most people have varifocals (which focus at all distances), however you may be prescribed intermediate glasses for specific tasks such as computer, piano or DIY. The intermediate addition is usually about half of the reading addition and is combined with your distance sphere to make your intermediate prescription.
