Keratoconus

Keratoconus - literally conical cornea - is a hereditary degenerative condition characterised by a gradual thinning of the cornea so that the internal pressure of the eye causes the central cornea to protrude. Keratoconus distorts vision in such a way that it may become difficult to correct with glasses so that specialist contact lenses may become necessary. If contact lenses are unsuccessful as the disease progresses then the only option may be a corneal transplant.
