Currently about 70% of people in England and Wales, and everyone in Scotland, is entitled to a free eye examination paid for by the National Health Service. Some people are also entitled to help with the cost of glasses or contact lenses.
You can get a free NHS eye examination if you are aged:
• 60 or over • under 16* • 16, 17 or 18 and in full time education*
Or if you (or your partner) receive the following benefits:
• Income Support* • Pension Credit Guarantee* • Income based Jobseekers Allowance* • Tax Credit (and you are named on a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate)*
You can also get an NHS funded eye test if you:
• suffer from diabetes or glaucoma • are aged 40 or over and are the child, brother, sister or parent of a person who has or had glaucoma • have a complex prescription under the NHS optical voucher scheme • are registered blind or partially sighted • are named on a valid HC2 certificate*
Those people marked * are also normally entitled to an NHS voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses. There are strict rules on how often we can test your eyes and how often an optical voucher can be issued. Please ask for further information.
If you request an NHS eye test you will be asked to provide evidence of your entitlement. You may also be asked for your National Insurance number and your doctor’s name and address. |
