Development of new blood vessels as an abnormal response to, for example, insufficient oxygen reaching the tissues nearby. Can occur on the iris as well as in or under the retina as a result of diabetic retinopathy, central retinal artery occlusion (blockage), or macula degeneration. Neovascularisation can also occur in the edge of the cornea in patients who fail to observe the wearing schedule for their contact lenses. Initially without any symptoms this is one of the main reasons contact lens wearers should attend for regular check-ups even if they don't feel they are having any problems. |
