RK

RK is a procedure to correct short sightedness. RK (Radial Keratotomy) involves making radial incisions to the cornea of the eye. The number of incisions made and their location is determined by the degree of nearsightedness. The incisions are made by a diamond blade to flatten the central portion of the cornea. This brings the focal point of the eye closer to the retina which improves the distance vision.

RK is not laser eye surgery and is considered an old form of eye surgery compared to all the newer laser treatments available. RK does come with it's disadvantages such as making the cornea weaker from the incisions. This can complicate future eye surgery such as for cataracts. Surgeons will often recommend other better alternative eye surgery available such as LASIK, LASEK and PRK. However, RK is suitable for people with mild short sightedness of up to 3 diopters.
