Semi-rimless

Semi-rimless glasses, also known as supra spectacles, do not have a full rim surrounding the lenses; rather the lenses are mounted in front of the eyes by being attached to a partial rim, usually at the top of the lens. The lenses are held in by means of a nylon supra cord that fits neatly in a groove in the edge of the lens.

Semi-rimless glasses are very popular as they suit most face shapes and complexions. They are less obtrusive, more comfortable and light weight compared to full rimmed frames. To ensure that your semi-rimless glasses are as unobtrusive as possible be sure to request anti-reflection coated lenses.

Semi-rimless lenses must be supra-grooved and often chamfered in order to be accommodated by the frame. This involves specialist equipment and highly skilled technicians and because of this the lenses cost a bit more than standard.

Long-sighted customers (whose convex lenses are thinner at the edge than in the middle) should be aware that in order to ensure sufficient room for the groove in the lens edge, and ensure the lenses don't chip under normal use, their lenses may be slightly thicker than in full rim or rimless frames of the same size and shape. This limitation does not apply to customers who are short sighted as their lenses are thicker at the edge and can easily accommodate the supra groove.
